We had the Great Power Outage of 2003 on Thursday and the Woodward Dream Cruise started on Friday. On Friday around 7 PM the power starting
returning along the route. On Saturday, they claimed that about 60% of Metro Detroit had power.
Attendance at the cruise was way down and had a lot fewer classic cars. There were
lots of out-of-state cars along the route. The good news was that there wasn't a
shortage of great cars!
These pictures are from Friday night.
On Friday night, the Sheriff's Mobile Command Center was cruising.
The rear quarter panel is longer than most cars!
The screen is at least 20 feet wide and is located in the middle of the island.
The rest of the pictures are from Saturday.
The Mustang drive-in is put up each year by Ford for the Dream Cruise.
This is an old Checker. Most were sold as taxi cabs. The rear passenger area is huge.
The Chicken Shack
chicken is out every year. He hands out free wings.
Trucks drive around
full of advertising throughout the cruise.
Here's an airplane
with sign and 3 blimps.
A small 9-story Chevy
ad.
I had never
seen one of these before (Chrysler Crossfire).
The number of police
was incredible. Since many departments needed officers for traffic duty (because of no power), the State Police were very much in force. We followed
what appeared to be an unmarked
state police car with dealer plate for about 15 minutes and suddenly 2 or 3 official State Police cars pulled him over. He wasn't a cop but his car probably was.
The fire department
(and others) were giving rides over the crowd.
A small police
motorcycle collection. Later we we were in a shopping center and ran across a
group of over 100 police motorcycles.
Even Popeye and
Delphi were there.
Lots of blimps were
present.
A pirate-mobile was a
new addition and got a lot of laughs.
Many of the police
departments have a classic car.
Here are a few of
the mounted officers near the end of the cruise.
You could get rides on all sorts of unique vehicles include Army transport
trucks, wagons drawn by tractors, a truck with grass, a picnic table
and trees. and a large variety of limos and busses.
