We were at Zion in 1999 during the fourth of July week. Then, the park was
pretty busy but not crowded. The city of Springdale is just to the west of Zion
and you drive through the city just before entering the park. In 1999, the city
was very small. As we approached the city this time,
we were amazed. The city was 4 or 5 times larger. We didn't recognize any of the
buildings. The motels and shops were all gone and replaced with huge hotels and
stores. We arrived on the Thursday before Memorial Day and it was really busy. We
went to the park's visitors center and there were less than 20 parking spots available
out of 500 to 1000 spaces. People were everywhere! We decided to just leave and find
greener pastures.
