Sunset Crater Volcano National Monument, May 2003


Sunset Crater's main eruption was in 1064. The last activity was about 1250. As you can see, the re-growth of vegetation has been very slow.


  


  


  


  


  


  


The Lava Flow Nature Trail is about a mile long.


  


  


  


That's the San Francisco Peaks in the background. You can see them for hundreds of miles.

The San Francisco Peaks are in the background. The peaks were named by a group of Franciscan missionaries in honor of St. Francis of Assisi.
