Sunset Crater's main eruption was in 1064. The last activity was about 1250. As you can see, the re-growth of vegetation has
been very slow.
The
Lava Flow Nature Trail is about a mile long.
That's the San Francisco Peaks in the background. You can see them for hundreds of
miles.
The
cone is about 1,000 feet high.
This
is a collapsed lava tube.
The
San Francisco Peaks are in the background. The peaks were named by a group of
Franciscan missionaries in honor of St. Francis of Assisi.
