Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument, May 2003

Grand Staircase is a huge National Monument that was created in 1997. It is the only National Park or Monument managed by the BLM (Bureau of Land Management).

Hole-in-the-Rock Road is about 55 miles long. Mormons made the road in the late 1870s. The last 5 miles are very rough as the road drops over 1200 feet and requires 4-wheel drive.

Along the road there are lots of cacti in bloom.

The road was very washboarded.
