Cathedral Valley,
Capitol Reef National Park, May 2003

Cathedral Valley is a 58 mile loop trail.

You start the trip by driving into the river, staying on the right side, and then crossing the river. The river bed is firm and is easy to negotiate. Depending on weather, you can cross the river in most vehicles (although it's best to have a high clearance one).

We went down Thousand Lake Mountain Road for about 6 miles. If you want to go on it, I strongly suggest you have 4 wheel drive. It's very rocky and narrow and we could only go 5 mph in many sections. We pulled over and the front right tire fell into a hole that I couldn't have gotten out of without 4 wheel drive.

Much of the road is very nice.

This is a Gypsum Sinkhole. It's 200 feet deep and 50 feet wide.

Glass Mountain is a large mound of selenite crystals (which is glass gypsum).

Thin layers are like glass, crystal clear.
