Canyonlands National Park, May 2003

Today, it was raining and we decided to drive around on the side roads for a while. We took Highway 279 which starts off paved and then continually deteriorates.

We found some pictographs.

It was the first time we've seen much rain in Utah.

We decided to try some of the side dirt roads.

It was raining pretty hard all night and streams were forming.

This the Laredo that we rented. It was very nice.

At places, the crossing were pretty rough. This one had a foot and half hole.

The main road we were following becomes a dirt road and follows the Colorado River. It was pretty good so we kept following it.

We ran into a couple of guys who were going the other way. The highway had ended and now the road cut across Canyonlands National Park. They said the road was pretty good and the rain hadn't caused any problems. So, we decided to try it.

This is the Colorado river.

We're working our way up and will end up at the top.

You can see the road below. We took a series of rough switchbacks up the side of the mountain.

We've made it to the top!

Here's a self pay station. It's located miles from any real road.

Here's our mud splattered truck.
