Frederik Meijer Gardens, April 2003

I went to visit my brother who lives just outside of Grand Rapids and wanted to see Meijer Gardens' annual butterfly exhibit. It runs from March 1 to April 30. In November, I had been to Butterfly World by Ft. Lauderdale, FL and was really impressed. Well, unfortunately, I was somewhat disappointed here. The types of butterflies was limited and the number of visitors weren't.  Luckily I got there about 9:20 and went right to the butterfly exhibit. I stayed for about an hour and a half and then decided to go outside and cool off for a while. When I returned about 45 minutes later, there were at least a hundred people waiting in line to get into the exhibit and another hundred waiting to purchase tickets into the gardens. I went on Saturday, April 26. Here's my recommendation: Don't go the first or last two weeks of the exhibit, go on a weekday, and before 3 or 4 o'clock. If you plan on taking pictures, go on a sunny day between 10 and 2 (so you get the most sunlight), make sure you have a close focusing lens, use fast film, and be patient.

Most of these pictures were taken within 6 feet of each other. It was the only well lit spot that butterflies came to.
