Around
1900, a group of Japanese moved to Florida hoping to establish a Japanese
community and grow pineapples and other fruits and vegetables that they grew in
Japan. They weren't successful and eventually gave up. Most moved back to Japan.
One man, Mr. Morikami, was able to grow vegetables better suited to the soil and
was very successful. He left his estate to the government to make a museum and gardens.
